Here’s A Happy For You

She sat a small orange on my desk with the words, “Here’s a happy for you”, and kept on walking. I stopped working and sat for a moment as I breathed in those words, “Here’s a happy for you”. Did my sweet friend know how much my heart longed for happy? I peeled the orange and tasted the sweet, tangy juiciness and the deep parts of me settled down in that space. A heart heavy, begin to feel a little lighter. Was I THAT worn down and empty? If I was, how could a simple orange and a five little words move me?     The orange tasted lovely, a smile began to emerge from the inside. I needed a “happy” busting into my normal routine where I felt stuck and stale. I needed reminding of the sweetness of friendship, the treasure of thinking of others, and the beauty of the…

A Sucker For Unexpected Gifts

A sad face, toilet paper emoji awaited me. A facial expression made out of toilet paper, placed on a roll of toilet paper, so I could not miss it. My daughter left me this creative gift, with a clear message, in a place she knew I would go. The next day I found another gift. Apparently I had redeemed myself in her eyes, as the sad face had now morphed into a smiley face. Children know how to give gifts, where to place them, and exactly how to get their message across to us don’t they? I am a sucker for unexpected finds, the kind that imply someone thought of you and wanted you to know that they thought of you. Maybe a note of thanks left in the room where guests recently stayed in your home. Maybe a photo printed, framed, and wrapped (of a memory you shared with…

Roasted Faith Series – Part 2: More Faith

Each month more and more homes foreclosed all around us and we lowered the asking price of our house to no avail. Thirteen long, stretched-out, warren-out months passed. The economy crash had sucked the life out of our business and my husband had taken a job out of state. The kids and I stayed behind to finish school and sell our home. We envisioned the house selling quickly and joining my husband under one roof in no time at all. That “short” faith turned “long” and more difficult than we anticipated. The caffeine buzz wears off and it seems our faith buzz can too. We know, that we KNOW God can do all things, but this time the situation is larger in scope; it’s more complicated; and the process is moving slow. Faith should come easy right? Not for me and maybe not for you either. I struggle between the…

Keep Showing Up

With each move over the past seven years we have sorted, cleaned out, and packed up in preparation for another life change. Each location represents a move, a transition, an adventure, a new season, and an inner longing to be home again. The deep wrestle within, over “what’s next”,  intensified in my heart as time edged forward towards another crossroad in our lives. The questions flooding my mind: What is next? Another transition God, really, how many do you think one can handle? Circumstances mixed with frustrations can make us question where we are, what God is doing, and then blind us to what he’s given us right where we are at. In my quiet time with God I could hear the whispers, “You’re Next”. Next for what? What does that mean? "You prepare while I work." Ok God, I will prepare, but what are you working on? “I will give you…

Don’t Opt Out of Trusting, Opt In!

When we chose to focus on our issue, we opt out of trusting and we opt into second guessing ourselves and God. We rehearse earth’s language instead of what our Heavenly Father is speaking to our hearts. We find ourselves awake at night; pressure increasing mentally and physically; running in mind circles, we are spent. In an effort to grasp answers we were not meant to define or capture ourselves, our energy is depleted. Avoid this fitful exhaustion by repeating heaven’s language; the Word that was made flesh, that came to dwell among us. Rehearsing the Word of God calms our spirit, delivers heaven’s truth to our hearts, and replaces grasping, for what we cannot quite reach on our own, with a trusting peace that is accompanied by REST. Don’t opt out of trusting, opt in. “Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises SHAPE your worries into prayers, letting…

Change Can Cause Us to Value What Remains the Same.

Ever had that experience - the one that causes you to appreciate home a bit more than before, even if "home" has it’s own set of quirks? Lot’s of driving and then a little sightseeing with beautiful views so we thought. Who builds a pedestrian only bridge? Big disappointment to the girl who wanted to ride across a bridge taking in the views! The redeeming factors of this tourist fail moment was the specialty coffee shop and sandwich shop within a short distance from the pedestrian bridge. This was much too hot of a day to walk across a bridge, whether it had great views or not.  Back on the road, a few more hours of driving and we finally pulled safely into our own garage. Awe, relief! After eight plus hours on the road we had made it home. Sadly enough, vacation had come to a close. Memories made, photos taken, tan…
