Roasted Faith Series – Part 1: Messy Faith

By | Faith | 14 Comments

Those who know me, know that I love baking. Recently I tried a new recipe and it flopped, literally. As I’m reaching out in new faith, for this next season in life, I find my faith a little shaky. Kind of like the three layer cake I made that started sliding off it’s foundation. There is nothing you can do, but push it back together. When that didn’t quite work, I scooped it up in pieces and put it in a casserole dish. Whatever it takes right? My faith might be a mess, but I won’t let my mess, stop my faith! My faith might be a mess, but I won’t let my mess stop my faith! Click To Tweet Messy or not it’s my faith and I’m determined to feed my faith, not my fear. So I’ve been talking about the miracles that I have seen God do and…

Keep Showing Up

With each move over the past seven years we have sorted, cleaned out, and packed up in preparation for another life change. Each location represents a move, a transition, an adventure, a new season, and an inner longing to be home again. The deep wrestle within, over “what’s next”,  intensified in my heart as time edged forward towards another crossroad in our lives. The questions flooding my mind: What is next? Another transition God, really, how many do you think one can handle? Circumstances mixed with frustrations can make us question where we are, what God is doing, and then blind us to what he’s given us right where we are at. In my quiet time with God I could hear the whispers, “You’re Next”. Next for what? What does that mean? “You prepare while I work.” Ok God, I will prepare, but what are you working on? “I will give you…

Truth Is We All Have Cracks

By | Encouragement, Scripture | 3 Comments

Stepping on a squishy, gritty surface with bare feet, it took a minute to register the sensation. The stamped concrete floor in the hallway was hard and cold, where I placed my bare foot was strangely cushioned. Looking down I saw that I had stepped on a crack in the cement with sandy colored clay, broken up in tiny morsels, exploding in little mounds over the edges and . . . there were ants crawling all around.   The crack was not new; living in Mississippi you soon find out that many homes have foundational issues due to the expanding and contracting Yazoo Clay. What was unfamiliar, the earth under the house, now inside the house. The culprits: fire ants.   Before we moved from Colorado to Mississippi I was not privy to the ways of fire ants or Yazoo Clay. In the fire ant community the ants work for…

The Parting Gift

A Sucker For Unexpected Gifts

| Encouragement | 5 Comments

A sad face, toilet paper emoji awaited me. A facial expression made out of toilet paper, placed on a roll of toilet paper, so I could not miss it. My daughter left me this creative gift, with a clear message, in a place she knew I would go. The next day I found another gift. Apparently I had redeemed myself in her eyes, as the sad face had now morphed into a smiley face. Children know how to give gifts, where to place them, and exactly how to get their message across to us don’t they? I am a sucker for unexpected finds, the kind that imply someone thought of you and wanted you to know that they thought of you. Maybe a note of thanks left in the room where guests recently stayed in your home. Maybe a photo printed, framed, and wrapped (of a memory you shared with…

Roasted Faith Series Part 3: Hard Faith

| Faith | 14 Comments

We had the most successful summer ever and then the fourth quarter hit like a ton of bricks smashing. We broke hard; three and a half years of hard work down to an instant, flat nothing. What do you say when you have to lay off employees? What happens when faith breaks and risk is rewarded with failure? It was the fourth quarter of 2007, the beginning of the great crash of 2008. Our accountant assured us we were not the only ones hurting. She had clients in business for 20 plus years that were suffering; some were surviving, some were not, and others it was yet to be determined. Misery loves company; it was good to know we were not alone in the chaos. I remember praying desperately that God would turn things around and yet, the worst came. Our lives were forever changed by this turn of events…

Roasted Faith Series – Part 2: More Faith

| Encouragement, Faith, Scripture | 8 Comments

Each month more and more homes foreclosed all around us and we lowered the asking price of our house to no avail. Thirteen long, stretched-out, warren-out months passed. The economy crash had sucked the life out of our business and my husband had taken a job out of state. The kids and I stayed behind to finish school and sell our home. We envisioned the house selling quickly and joining my husband under one roof in no time at all. That “short” faith turned “long” and more difficult than we anticipated. The caffeine buzz wears off and it seems our faith can too. Click To Tweet The caffeine buzz wears off and it seems our faith buzz can too. We know, that we KNOW God can do all things, but this time the situation is larger in scope; it’s more complicated; and the process is moving slow. Faith should come…

Lover of Jesus, Family, Love to Laugh & Drink Coffee

Faith Caffeine: A boost of hope (caffeine) for your everyday kind of extraordinary faith. Making space to authentically share, see, hear, heal, dream, create, explore, love, and be.
Out of the being comes doing and doing means moving. I’m determined to keep moving forward scared and to encourage you and others to join me. The key is to keep moving, right? Will you join me on the journey?
Whether your faith is wobbly or feels small and insignificant or is on the brink of exploding, for all God has done – know even just a tiny spark of faith matters. It’s extraordinary as God takes the tiny sparks that feel like nothing to us and creates new LIFE in, through and around us as we place our trust in Him.
A bit about me: I’m the strong-willed, dark headed girl from California who ended up making the deep South home for the past five years, with my husband and two children. In between California and Mississippi was a long stretch in the Midwestern state of Missouri and then a short stay in Colorado. Many of my closest friends are scattered far from my new southern roots. I’m still learning to say, “yes” to God instead of running the other way like Jonah or protesting until I make God mad like Moses. Well, . . . I still may run a little, protest a bit (while kicking and screaming in my “inside thoughts” and sometimes out loud too) and then I mostly give in. Maybe you can relate?
Writing is my way to make sense of this life, to untangle my deepest emotions, to wrestle out truth over facts and to hear God as I pause in His Word and rest in His presence.
My passion, hope, and prayer are that I can encourage you and others to walk in freedom and keep moving towards all the purpose and abundance that God has created you for. That is the reason for this blog. I long for you to know that you are loved, seen, never alone and that you matter to God right where you are, right now. Even if that place is dark, awkward, and lonely – know He is there with you.
I love to laugh, read, relate to others, and passionately communicate truth. I hope to serve you well.
Join me on the journey,
Joelle
