Plan For The Impossible

I cut Magnolia leaves off of the branches of three magnolia trees across the street from our home and piled them in a grocery shopping bag. I hurried back across the street hoping the neighbors did not notice or if they did notice, that they did not care. So funny, doing this at the age of 43. Three Magnolia trees right across the street. Check. I had wire & wire cutters. Check. I bought the grapevine wreath for a whopping $3.88 on sale. Check. Why had I waited so long to make a simple magnolia wreath? I made assumptions and didn’t take into account what I had, what I needed and what I could do with what I had. There is value in planning for what you desire. Without a plan or a determination to get there, most likely you won’t. What are you determined to have or do or…

It’s Okay To Break

Pretzels with sherbet ice cream are the perfect blend of salty and sweet, crunchy and smooth, until you bite down breaking off a temporary cap on a tooth that previously broke. Maybe crunching on chips and salsa earlier in the day did not help to keep my cap in tack. It broke, I break, you break, we all break down at times don’t we? I could not will the emotions to go away, nor the melting to stop. Tears streamed down my face even though I was doing my best to stop the flood of emotions. A virus taking it’s toll and stressful situations in various areas of life bearing down, and I broke. I balled and at the most inconvenient time and place. Can we just keep all these emotions tucked away, nice and neat, until I can get home please! The other day I was determined to get…

Roasted Faith Series – Part 2: More Faith

Each month more and more homes foreclosed all around us and we lowered the asking price of our house to no avail. Thirteen long, stretched-out, warren-out months passed. The economy crash had sucked the life out of our business and my husband had taken a job out of state. The kids and I stayed behind to finish school and sell our home. We envisioned the house selling quickly and joining my husband under one roof in no time at all. That “short” faith turned “long” and more difficult than we anticipated. The caffeine buzz wears off and it seems our faith buzz can too. We know, that we KNOW God can do all things, but this time the situation is larger in scope; it’s more complicated; and the process is moving slow. Faith should come easy right? Not for me and maybe not for you either. I struggle between the…

Truth Is We All Have Cracks

Stepping on a squishy, gritty surface with bare feet, it took a minute to register the sensation. The stamped concrete floor in the hallway was hard and cold, where I placed my bare foot was strangely cushioned. Looking down I saw that I had stepped on a crack in the cement with sandy colored clay, broken up in tiny morsels, exploding in little mounds over the edges and . . . there were ants crawling all around.   The crack was not new; living in Mississippi you soon find out that many homes have foundational issues due to the expanding and contracting Yazoo Clay. What was unfamiliar, the earth under the house, now inside the house. The culprits: fire ants.   Before we moved from Colorado to Mississippi I was not privy to the ways of fire ants or Yazoo Clay. In the fire ant community the ants work for…

Pushing Back in the Fire

I love gazing into a crackling, well contained fire. The flames are full of motion, you see light of varying shades and colors dancing, there is warmth and the smell of fire that fills the air. Whether it be in a fire pit outside on a cool, crisp fall evening or near a fireplace snuggled up inside on a cold winters night. There is something mesmerizing, mysterious and even desirable about fire. Has anyone ever not had access to a fireplace and played a Fireplace DVD, during the winter months, just for the effect? Ok, maybe that was just me. What we know about fire is that fire creates heat. Fire is not desirable when heat is in high supply. During the months of summer it never crosses my mind to want to sit by a fire. If you have ever lived in the deep South you know that sometimes…
